RAD Self-Defense System

RAD (Rape Agression Defense) System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. Designed by police officers and safety experts, RAD uses a woman’s natural strengths effectively against an attacker’s vulnerabilities. The training is physically demanding. Nationally certified RAD instructors teach every class. Each participant will get a workbook and reference manual outlining the entire defense program. This manual is the key to a free lifetime return and practice policy for completing the program. You will attend four 3-hour sessions. The fourth class is a simulation that is optional but highly recommended. INSTRUCTORS: Members of the Wells Police Department including Officer John Riegel, Sergeant Adam Shaw and Officer Brett Tishim, who have been nationally trained and certified to teach the RAD System.

Spanish for Beginners

Buenos Dias! This is the perfect opportunity to learn basic Spanish grammar, vocabulary and common phrases. Pedro will teach you everyday greetings, days of the week, months of the year, weather, money, numbers, transportation, food, and asking for and giving directions. Knowing basic Spanish is a great skill for communicating in today’s culture. (No class on 11/22) INSTRUCTOR: Pedro Gil is originally from the Dominican Republic, so Spanish is his native language. He was a professor of Philosophy and History in the DR at UASD. Pedro has taught Spanish at other adult education programs in the past and looks forward to teaching you!

Has it been awhile since you have exercised? If the answer is yes, then this class is for you. This low-impact, easy-to-follow exercise class uses light weights to strengthen and tone your muscles. In the process, you will strengthen your bones. We will also concentrate on balance moves, as this is very important for stability and overall health. Instead of crunches, we will focus on core strength moves. Exercises will help you increase flexibility in arms, legs and lower back. Have fun and leave feeling more energized! Wear comfortable clothing, sneakers, and bring an optional mat or towel. INSTRUCTOR: Judy Stark has been a Certified Group Fitness Instructor in numerous formats for 15+ years.

Sushi may seem mysterious and exotic, but making great sushi at home is something anyone can do. Join this fun, hands-on adventure into the art of sushi rolling. Carol will reveal the many nutritional benefits of sea vegetables. You will choose from a wide assortment of sushi fillings, customizing your own rolls to eat during class. Miso soup and a dessert, both made with sea vegetables, will also be served. Everyone will receive a complimentary bamboo mat. No raw fish is used. This class is vegan-friendly. Please bring a cutting board, sharp, non-serrated knife, large bowl and a cotton dish towel. Cost includes all food. INSTRUCTOR: Carol Steingart is a marine educator, owner of Coast Encounters, LLC, and specializes in unique programs centered around Maine’s rocky intertidal region.

Ukulele for Beginners

The ukulele is a versatile, portable instrument that is fun to play. You can play folk, rock, blues, pop, country and even classical music. Using familiar songs, you will learn basic chord positions, strumming and picking styles. No experience with a stringed instrument or reading music needed. You must have a soprano, concert, or tenor size ukulele (no baritones) and an electronic tuner. Request information at registration about how and where you can buy the best ukulele for you. All music included. INSTRUCTOR: Duncan Perry is a multi-instrumentalist who has been playing the ukulele for 10 years. He is a teacher, performer and entertains regularly at festivals, nursing homes, libraries and schools. He is a member of the Falmouth Library Ukulele Society (FLUKES).

Bring ideas for projects to class for instruction tailored to your needs, or participate in guided exercises to gain a deeper understanding of this medium. This presentation will cover the important basics you will need to know as well as options that may be useful as you make your enrollment decisions.
