Part 1: Basic Survival Skills (4/4, 6:30-8:30 p.m.):
Learn survival techniques that will enable you to survive should you become lost or injured while in the woods. Topics include camping skills, safety, environmental issues, fire building, shelters and dealing with heat exhaustion or frostbite.
Part 2: Map & Compass Reading (4/11, 6:30-8:00 p.m.):
Knowledge of land navigation skills are important for traveling in the woods or unfamiliar territory. Learn to use a compass and topography maps correctly. Bring your own compass if you have one.
Part 3: Introduction to Handheld GPS (4/25, 6:30-8:00 p.m.):
You will learn the basics of operating and navigating with a Global Positioning System (GPS). You will also have an opportunity to practice your new skills by doing some geocaching, which is using your GPS device to find hidden items. Bring your own GPS device if you have one. (Part 3 required for Part 4.)
Part 4: Intermediate GPS (5/2, 6:30-8:00 p.m.):
In this course, you will take information from topographic maps and enter it into GPS receivers. You will get hands-on experience using GPS receivers in locating specific areas and in geocaching. Bring your own GPS device if you have one.
Note: No class on 4/18.
INSTRUCTOR: Ron St. Saviour is a Registered Master Maine Guide in Outdoor Recreation and a Licensed Professional Maine Forester. He is also the founder and director of Southern Maine Guide Service “Outdoor School,” a unique alternative education program.
