Beginner Guitar

This beginner guitar course aims to give new students the ability to become their own teacher on the guitar. A student’s own interests help direct the learning goals to make practice time as fruitful as possible. After gaining some of the basics, students learn how to teach themselves and follow their musical interests with the guitar. You will learn: tuning and tuning resources, physical conditioning, stretching, practice techniques, reading tabs and music notation, chords (major, minor, 7ths, extensions, etc.), chord voicing, flat picking, strumming styles, finger picking technique, and basic guitar solo scales and licks. Students must bring their own acoustic guitar.

INSTRUCTOR: Chrystoph (Kit) Demos was privately educated in classical and jazz studies since age 6 and has performed jazz internationally. He continues to perform and record throughout New England.

Intro to Harmonica

You can play the harmonica! In this course you will learn to play a song, a little blues and various techniques that you can practice at home. This take-along instrument is fun to learn and play, and you will impress family and friends in no time. Minimum age for participation is 8 when accompanied by an adult. Cost includes a harmonica and song booklet.

INSTRUCTORS: Mike and Beverly Rogers provide workshops throughout New England and private lessons by appointment. They are members of Salt River, a local folk quartet that plays at area concerts and coffeehouses. Mike also performs old-time blues with Poor Howard Stith and presents his own program at area libraries and concert venues.

Ukulele for Beginners - NEW!

The ukulele is a versatile, portable instrument that is fun to play. You can play folk, rock, blues, pop, country and even classical music. Using familiar songs, you will learn basic chord positions, strumming and picking styles. No experience with a stringed instrument or reading music needed. You must have a soprano, concert, or tenor size ukulele (no baritones) and an electronic tuner. Request information at registration about how and where you can buy the best ukulele for you. All music included.

INSTRUCTOR: Duncan Perry is a multi-instrumentalist who has been playing the ukulele for 10 years. He is a teacher, performer and entertains regularly at festivals, nursing homes, libraries and schools. He is a member of the Falmouth Library Ukulele Society (FLUKES).
